When I got some news yesterday I’d been waiting over a year and a half to hear, this was my first thought:
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. (Ephesians 1:3)
I don’t say this so that you think I’m uber holy. I say it because to me, it represents a milestone. It means that something I’ve worked on (albeit inconsistently) this year is actually working. What have I been working on? Memorizing scripture.
I think I’ve mentioned this before, but a couple of years ago, I was plagued by nightmares and an intense fear of the dark. I talked to my parents’ pastor and he encouraged me to start memorizing Scripture. I don’t remember much about the conversation, but it made sense to me. Obviously, something was taking hold of my thoughts that was not healthy. If I made a conscious effort to memorize Scripture, I figured there’d be less room in my mind for the negative, evil thoughts.
And guess what? It worked. Filling my mind with God’s Word made it easier to “take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ”. (2 Corinthians 10:5) It took discipline, and it’s not something I do nearly as much as I know I should, but there is power in words. There is great power in God’s Word.
So let’s strategize. What ideas do you have for memorizing verses? The only thing that worked for me was writing verses on index cards to carry with me and look at whenever I had a free moment. Do you have something that’s worked for you?
